During the primary years between 1st and 3rd grade, children at Carden Academy Morgan Hill continue to build on the foundation established in the Kindergarten program. They learn to accept responsibility for their actions and the important lessons of cause and effect. Through encouragement and reinforcement, children in these critical learning years develop stamina and perseverance. They begin to live life triumphantly, proud of their accomplishments and eager to learn.
In 1st grade, Carden students continue working with the Carden Vowel Chart and increasing their phonetic skills. They are introduced to parts of speech, the concept of key word and titling, and forms of verbs. They begin working on cursive writing, and spelling and dictation. In math, concepts of money and measurement are studied in addition to learning the language of numbers, patterns, rules and geometry.

In 2nd grade, children continue to enhance their vocabulary through classic literature. They develop their reading skills, with an emphasis on comprehension and visualization. They progress to reading chapter books and advance to more challenging classics such as Old Mother Westwind. Their cursive writing skills are perfected and they begin writing composition. In math they continue multiplication, learn division, and continue their study of geometry.
The days of 3rd grade students are filled with rich educational experiences. In addition to advanced studies in reading, grammar, and composition, they study the earth and life around them, building insect habitats, conducting experiments and developing their critical thinking skills. Children develop the ability to explain what they are doing and teach it back to the teachers and their peers. Their independence and ability to 'think' grows as their accomplishments grow.
In addition to robust studies in academic subjects, primary school children develop their social skills, sense of responsibility and maturity. Through interaction with several special subject teachers and their older schoolmates, they grow and mature, exposed to many different personalities and cultures.
