At Carden Academy Morgan Hill, children begin learning at a young age. Our Junior Kindergarten (K-1) and Kindergarten (K-2) students enjoy a nurturing and challenging environment where academics are balanced with rich, cultural studies in art, music, French, computers, and P.E. At the very age when they are bursting with curiosity and enthusiasm for everything they encounter, they are awakened to the joys of reading and writing and the beauty of knowledge.
The children in K-1 begin printing and learning pre-reading skills through a series of activities and stories designed to engage and hold their attention. In addition, emphasis is placed on developing all-important listening and socialization skills. Through a system of praise and encouragement, they are taught to produce quality work and to take pride in their achievements. The days of both K-1 and K-2 are filled with laughter, lessons in imagination and play, writing, spelling, reading, math, science, social studies, and philanthropy.

For academic subjects, the children receive instruction in small groups of four or five, based on their learning speed and skill level. The students work closely with their teacher at a group table, which allows each child to accelerate at his or her own pace and allows the teacher to continually assess their progress, reconfigure groups and provide reinforcement where needed. The concept of group instruction continues throughout their education at Carden Academy.
Children in K-2 continue to build on the basics learned in K-1. They are introduced to the Carden Vowel Chart and blending sounds, and begin reading using the phonetics-based rules developed by Mae Carden. The program, rich in classic literature and poetry, encourages children to visualize what they are reading and focuses on comprehension. In math, children learn the concepts of addition and subtraction, even and odd numbers, counting by twos, fives and tens, and telling time.
The Carden Method® builds independence, good work habits, an enterprising spirit, ethics and traditional values. Graduates of Carden's Kindergarten program are self-confident, poised, and ready to move to the next level of academics.
